Nuclear as the backup.. Less fuel make it any sort to carry. H3 depot on the Moon as the last stop .. Sorta like being in Mojave "next fuel stop 93,000,000 miles".
Ion solar engine still have mass and the ship is massive to fly it efficiently with ions. With nuclear you just need hydrogen gas, and that can be manufactured anywhere in the universe.
But shouldn't these ships have nuclear power instead of solar panels?
